Why the Venta?

Around Hebbronville, Texas, everybody called the cattle auction “the Venta.” On auction days, my grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Evers, ran Corral Cafe inside, though hardly anyone called it that. You went to the Venta, saw your neighbors, did a little business, and had a Venta Burger. Years later, people still tell Mrs. Evers they wish they could have one again.

As a little kid, my favorite spot was the cash register. I’d fight my Tía Elva, my grandmother’s sister, over who got to work it, because I wanted to be the one cashing people out. Decades later, I guess I’m still angling for that register.

The Venta brings that spirit back: a modern place for communities to come together.
